Doug Kelly interviewed me last Tuesday about the comic John Wooley and I created, The Miracle Squad.  The interview will be published in Back Issue Magazine.    Miracle Squad was set in late 1930s Hollywood, and centered on the fictitious movie studio, Miracle Studios.   The owner of the studio, two or three actors, the studio detective , and a mentally challenged giant , who worked as a grip, comprised the Squad.   They fought gangsters, a corrupt oil company, a hooded hate group and such.  One issue was set in dust bowl Oklahoma.

Magazine cover

One of my favorite illustrations I’ve done in the last few months.   Note the retro litho dot coloring, and the multi colored offset line.  Kind of a Pop Art approach on this cover.

Before doing a pencilled illustration, I draw a “rough”.  These are small, around 5″by 3.5″.  Roughing out illustrations is my favorite part of the creative process.  Next I blow these up to full size and pencil over them on a light box.

I really enjoy doing storyboards.  Just pure drawing and storytelling with little editorial direction from art directors.
